✏️ Writing Fun: A/An & Can/Can’t ✏️
Welcome to our writing adventure! Today we’ll learn about using a and an, and writing about what we can and can’t do!
When to Use A or An
The Simple Rule
Use a before words that start with a consonant sound.
Use an before words that start with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).
(cat starts with consonant)
(apple starts with vowel)
(dog starts with consonant)
(egg starts with vowel)
Remember the Sound!
It’s about the sound, not just the letter!
an hour (hour sounds like “our”)
a university (university sounds like “you”)
Writing About What You Can and Can’t Do
Can = Able to do something
Use can to talk about things you are able to do.
Example: “I can swim very well.”
Can’t = Not able to do something
Use can’t to talk about things you are not able to do.
